Business

It's a question that used to draw a sigh and a roll of the eyes, but when did you last ask it of yourself?

Where do you think you're going?

It's absolutely critical you know the answer. And you might want to look down, because it's just as important that you know where you are. Are you on the path you envisioned you'd traveling 10 years ago? How about 5 years ago? Last year? Are you as far along as you'd planned to be?

Where do you think you're going?

Do you have your map marked? You'd never leave for vacation without knowing what your route looks like and how long it should take. You'd better have something planned, because it matters whether you're turning left or right when you get to the end of the driveway. The route to your destination is the difference between a full inspection and a glance at the fuel gauge, getting new tires or not, and if you need to stop for gas or if the gas station is further away than your final destination.

Where do you think you're going?

Is your destination far enough away or is it too far? Michelangelo said “"Our greatest tragedy is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." There is the possibility that you've set your goal too far out of reach, just so you have a reason to give up. Maybe you got caught up in the moment and declared you'd go 1,000 miles without taking into consideration that you don't even have a car or money for a bus ticket. Some goals just aren't attainable, but it's a far greater likelihood that you've set your sights too low. Your car is in good condition and gassed up, and you set your destination as the house 3 doors down. You've got the miles for a plane ticket and you're cashing them in for a plane ticket to the municipal airport across town. Consider how far you can comfortably go, then determine to go one step more. Think about what you're on track to reach, then set your sights 25% higher. Look at the numbers on the wall, scratch them out and make them higher. Ask yourself what you would do if you knew you couldn't fail and make yourself go after it.

Where do you think you're going?

You'd better know.
